A ligand is an electron-pair donor (ion or molecule) attached to the central metal atom in a complex; e.g. NH3, H2O, Cl-, CN-.

In a coordination compound, the central metal atom or ion is surrounded by a certain number of ions or molecules that are bonded to it. These surrounding ions or molecules are called ligands.

A ligand contains at least one atom with a lone pair of electrons (a donor atom). It donates this lone pair to the central metal atom/ion, forming a coordinate (dative) bond. Thus a ligand acts as a Lewis base and the metal as a Lewis acid.

Ligands may be:

  • Neutral molecules, e.g. NH3 (ammine), H2O (aqua), CO (carbonyl). …
