Faraday's first law relates the amount of chemical change at an electrode to the quantity of electric charge passed.

Statement: The mass (m) of a substance deposited or liberated at an electrode during electrolysis is directly proportional to the quantity of electric charge (Q) passed through the electrolytic solution.

m∝Qm \propto Q

Since charge Q = current (I) × time (t):

m∝It⇒m=Z I tm \propto I t \quad\Rightarrow\quad m = Z \, I \, t

where Z is a constant called the electrochemical equivalent of the substance — it is defined as the mass of the substance deposited when a charge of exactly 1 coulomb is passed through the electrolyte.
