Faraday's first law says the amount of chemical change during electrolysis is proportional to the electric charge passed.

Faraday's First Law of Electrolysis states:

"The mass (m) of a substance deposited or liberated at an electrode during electrolysis is directly proportional to the quantity of electric charge (Q) passed through the electrolyte."

m∝Qm \propto Q

m=Z⋅Qm = Z \cdot Q

Since charge Q=I×tQ = I \times t (current × time), this can be written as:

m=Z⋅I⋅tm = Z \cdot I \cdot t

where:

  • mm = mass of substance deposited/liberated (g)
  • II = current passed (amperes)
  • tt = time for which current is passed (seconds)
  • ZZ = electrochemical equivalent of the substance (a constant equal to the mass deposited by passing 1 coulomb of charge) …
