Isotonic solutions are solutions with equal osmotic pressure at the same temperature.

Osmotic pressure (π) of a dilute solution is given by the van't Hoff equation π = CRT, where C is the molar concentration of solute particles. Two solutions are said to be isotonic if, at the same temperature, they have the same osmotic pressure, which (for non-electrolytes, or after accounting for the van't Hoff factor i for electrolytes) means they have the same molar concentration of solute particles.

When two isotonic solutions are separated by a semi-permeable membrane, there is no net flow of solvent across the membrane in either direction, since the osmotic pressures balance exactly.
