Two solutions with equal osmotic pressure at the same temperature are called isotonic solutions.

Osmotic pressure (π) of a solution depends on its molar concentration: π = CRT (van't Hoff equation), where C is the molar concentration of solute particles, R the gas constant and T the absolute temperature.

When two solutions are placed in contact through a semipermeable membrane and it is found that there is no net movement of solvent across the membrane, the two solutions must be exerting equal osmotic pressure — such solutions are called isotonic solutions.
