The transformer ratio is the ratio of the number of turns (or, equivalently, voltages) in the secondary winding to the primary winding of a transformer.

A transformer consists of a primary coil with NpN_p turns and a secondary coil with NsN_s turns, wound on a common laminated iron core. The transformer ratio (turns ratio) K is defined as:

K=NsNpK = \dfrac{N_s}{N_p}

For an ideal transformer (no energy losses), the induced EMF in each coil is proportional to its number of turns, so:

K=NsNp=VsVpK = \dfrac{N_s}{N_p} = \dfrac{V_s}{V_p}
