Magnetic lines are closed loops because magnetic monopoles do not exist — unlike electric field lines (which can start/end on isolated charges), a field line leaving a north pole has nowhere to terminate except a south pole.

Electric field lines can begin or end on isolated electric charges, because isolated positive and negative charges exist independently. Magnetism, however, always comes in dipoles — every magnet has both a north and a south pole; no isolated magnetic monopole (a lone N or a lone S) has ever been observed.

This physical fact is expressed as Gauss's law for magnetism:
