The absence of magnetic monopoles forces every magnetic field line to close on itself.

Unlike electric field lines, which originate on positive charges and terminate on negative charges (because isolated electric charges exist), magnetic field lines have no such starting or ending points because an isolated magnetic pole (a north pole without an accompanying south pole, or vice versa) has never been observed to exist in nature — magnetic poles always occur in pairs (dipoles). Consequently, a magnetic field line cannot simply begin or end in space; it must continue until it forms a closed loop, passing from the north pole to the south pole outside the magnet and from the south pole back to the north pole inside the magnet.
