Using the dipole equatorial-field relation, the earth's magnetic dipole moment comes out to about 1.05 x 10^23 A m^2.

At a point on the magnetic equator, the field of a magnetic dipole of moment m at distance R is:

B = (mu_0 / 4*pi) * (m / R^3)

Rearranging for m:

m = (4*pi / mu_0) * B * R^3 = B * R^3 / (10^-7)

since mu_0/(4*pi) = 10^-7 T m A^-1.

Substitute B = 4 x 10^-5 T and R = 6.4 x 10^6 m:
