Declination is simply the angular gap between where a compass points (magnetic north) and where true geographic north actually is.

At any place on the Earth, two vertical planes can be defined:

  • The geographic meridian: the vertical plane containing the Earth's geographic (true) north–south axis, passing through that place.
  • The magnetic meridian: the vertical plane in which a freely suspended magnetic needle (compass) aligns itself, containing the Earth's magnetic north–south direction at that place.

These two meridians generally do not coincide, because the Earth's magnetic poles are not exactly at its geographic poles.
