Interference and diffraction do not create or destroy energy; the total energy remains constant, it is merely redistributed — regions of destructive interference (minima) lose exactly the intensity that regions of constructive interference (maxima) gain.

At first glance, it might seem that at a point of destructive interference (a dark fringe), energy has simply vanished, violating energy conservation. This is not the case.

When two coherent waves interfere, the resultant intensity at a point is not simply the sum of the two individual intensities everywhere — it depends on the phase difference:

I=I1+I2+2I1I2cos⁡ϕI = I_1 + I_2 + 2\sqrt{I_1 I_2}\cos\phi

At points of constructive interference (ϕ=0,2π,…\phi = 0, 2\pi, \ldots), I=I1+I2+2I1I2I = I_1 + I_2 + 2\sqrt{I_1I_2}, which is greater than I1+I2I_1+I_2. At points of destructive interference (ϕ=π,3π,…\phi=\pi, 3\pi,\ldots), I=I1+I2−2I1I2I = I_1+I_2-2\sqrt{I_1I_2}, which is less than I1+I2I_1+I_2 (and can be zero for equal amplitudes).
