The assumed-mean method takes a convenient class mark AA as a reference, computes deviations di=xi−Ad_i=x_i-A, and corrects AA by the mean deviation.

[!FORMULA] xˉ=A+∑fidi∑fi,di=xi−A\bar{x}=A+\dfrac{\sum f_id_i}{\sum f_i}, \quad d_i=x_i-A

where AA = assumed mean (a chosen class mark), xix_i = class mark of the ii-th class, fif_i = frequency.

  1. Tabulate class marks:

    Class Intervalfif_ixix_i
    0–20310
    20–40230
    40–60550
    60–80670
    80–100490
  2. Choose the assumed mean as the class mark of the middle class: A=50A=50.

  3. Compute deviations di=xi−Ad_i=x_i-A and fidif_id_i:

    Class Intervalfif_ixix_idi=xi−50d_i=x_i-50fidif_id_i
    0–20310−40−120
    20–40230−20−40
    40–6055000
