Exercise 7.3 · Q1

Q.Two statements are given below followed by two conclusions numbered

(1) and (2). Take the given two statements to be true even if they seem to be at variance from commonly known facts. Read the conclusions and then decide which of the given conclusions logically follows from the two given statements, disregarding commonly known facts. Statements: Some actors are singers. All the singers are dancers. Conclusions:
  1. Some actors are dancers.
  2. No singer is actor.
Give answer:
(A) If only conclusion
(1) follows.
(B) If only conclusion
(2) follows.
(C) If either
(1) or
(2) follows.
(D) If neither
(1) nor
(2) follows.
(E) If both
(1) and
(2) follow.

Combining "Some actors are singers" with "All singers are dancers" validly gives "Some actors are dancers" (conclusion 1); conclusion 2 contradicts the first statement, so it cannot follow.

Syllogism rule (Some + All = Some): if "Some AA are BB" (particular affirmative) and "All BB are CC" (universal affirmative) share the middle term BB, then "Some AA are CC" follows validly.

Here AA = actors, BB = singers, CC = dancers.

  1. Statement 1 in symbols: Some AA are BB ("Some actors are singers").
  2. Statement 2 in symbols: All BB are CC ("All singers are dancers").
  3. Apply the Some+All=Some rule with common term BB: Some AA are CC, i.e. "Some actors are dancers." Conclusion (1) is valid.
  4. Test Conclusion (2), "No singer is actor": this directly contradicts Statement 1, which asserts some actors ARE singers. A conclusion that contradicts a given statement can never follow. Conclusion (2) is invalid.
  5. Hence only Conclusion (1) follows.
✓Final answer

(A) If only conclusion (1) follows.
