Use the mandatory "Unsubscribe" link carried by bulk/group mails (bottom of the mail, or beside the sender name in Gmail) to leave a list, and use the message's three-dot menu → "Block sender" to send all future mail from an address straight to Spam.

Mail services give you two different tools for two different problems: unsubscribe stops mail you once opted into (newsletters, mail groups), while block rejects a sender you never want to hear from. Here is a worked model answer:

A. Unsubscribing from a mail group / mailing list

  1. Open any message from the group or newsletter.
  2. Look for an "Unsubscribe" link. Anti-spam rules require legitimate bulk senders to include one — usually in the footer of the mail; Gmail additionally surfaces an Unsubscribe button at the top, next to the sender's name.
  3. Click it. Either you are unsubscribed instantly or a confirmation page/mail follows — confirm it.
  4. Some lists instead work by mail command: send a blank mail with the subject UNSUBSCRIBE to the list's admin address.
  5. For Google Groups specifically: open the group page → My membership settings → Leave group, or send a mail to groupname+unsubscribe@googlegroups.com.

B. Blocking an email sender

Gmail:

  1. Open a message from the unwanted sender.
  2. Click the three-dot (⋮) menu at the message's top-right corner.
  3. Select Block "sender name" and confirm. Every future mail from that address is delivered directly to the Spam folder.
  4. You can also choose Report spam or Report phishing from the same menu, which additionally trains the filter and alerts the provider.

Outlook: Settings → Mail → Junk email → Blocked senders and domains → Add the address. …
