The completed statements are: seven cervical vertebrae, fourteen phalanges per limb, tropomyosin and troponin as the extra thin-filament proteins, the sarcoplasmic reticulum as the calcium store, the 11th and 12th rib pairs as the floating ribs, and eight bones making up the cranium.

Each blank draws on a specific fact about the skeleton or the structure of muscle.

  • (a) seven (7). The number of cervical vertebrae is seven in almost all mammals, humans included — a striking constancy across the group, so all mammals except a few have seven cervical vertebrae.
  • (b) fourteen (14). In each limb the digits carry fourteen phalanges — the same count of fourteen finger bones in the forelimb and fourteen toe bones in the hind limb.
  • (c) tropomyosin and troponin. The thin filament is built from two strands of filamentous (F) actin wound helically together, and running alongside them are two filaments of tropomyosin, with the troponin complex sitting on the tropomyosin at regular intervals. In the resting state a subunit of troponin masks the sites on actin where myosin would bind.
  • (d) sarcoplasmic reticulum. Within a muscle fibre the endoplasmic reticulum is called the sarcoplasmic reticulum, and it serves as the store house of calcium ions, releasing them to trigger contraction and reclaiming them during relaxation. …
