The overlap between photosynthesis's action spectrum and chlorophyll a's absorption spectrum — both peaking in the blue and red regions — is the key evidence for concluding that chlorophyll a is the chief pigment driving photosynthesis.

The absorption spectrum of a pigment is the graph of how strongly it absorbs light of different wavelengths, and for chlorophyll a — the most abundant plant pigment in the world — this graph shows maximum absorption specifically in the blue and the red regions of the visible spectrum. Separately, the action spectrum of photosynthesis plots the actual rate of photosynthesis achieved at each wavelength of light, and this too is found to show its highest rates in the blue and red regions.

The conclusion drawn from seeing these two curves largely overlap is that chlorophyll a is the chief pigment associated with photosynthesis: since the wavelengths chlorophyll a absorbs most strongly are the same wavelengths that drive the fastest photosynthesis, chlorophyll a is understood to be the pigment principally responsible for capturing the light energy that photosynthesis uses. …
