Concept. Integrated Waste Water Treatment combines the usual mechanical/chemical sewage treatment with biological (natural) treatment using organisms in constructed marshes, so that water is cleaned in an eco-friendly way.
Why it helped. Conventional treatment alone does not remove all dissolved pollutants; passing the water through living marshes lets natural organisms absorb and assimilate the remaining pollutants, producing clean water and improving the marshland's quality.
Explanation in four steps.
- Conventional treatment: the waste water was first cleaned by conventional methods — sedimentation, filtering and chlorine treatment.
- Passing into marshes: the treated water was then let into a series of about six interconnected marshes (over roughly 60 hectares) planted with appropriate plants and holding suitable microbes.
- Biological cleaning: in the marshes, the algae, fungi, bacteria and plants neutralise, absorb and assimilate the pollutants and toxins from the water. …
