Stomata are tiny epidermal pores, each guarded by two guard cells, that allow gas exchange and transpiration.

Stomata (singular: stoma) are minute openings found mainly in the epidermis of leaves and, to a lesser extent, young green stems. Each stoma is surrounded by a pair of specialised, kidney-shaped (bean-shaped) epidermal cells called guard cells, which contain chloroplasts.
