The coelom is the true body cavity lined completely by mesoderm; its presence or absence is used to classify animals.

Short note on Coelom:

  1. The coelom is a cavity present between the body wall and the alimentary canal (gut) of an animal.
  2. In a true coelom, the cavity is lined on all sides by mesoderm (a mesodermal epithelium called peritoneum). Animals possessing such a cavity are called coelomates — e.g. annelids, arthropods, molluscs, echinoderms and chordates.
  3. If the body cavity is not lined by mesoderm on all sides (mesoderm present only as scattered pouches), it is a pseudocoelom, and such animals are pseudocoelomates (e.g. Ascaris). Animals with no body cavity are acoelomates (e.g. flatworms). …
