(a) Symmetry in animals: Symmetry refers to how body parts are arranged about a central axis or plane.

  • Asymmetry: body cannot be divided into equal halves by any plane (e.g. sponges).
  • Radial symmetry: any plane passing through the central axis divides the body into two equal halves (e.g. Cnidarians, adult echinoderms).
  • Bilateral symmetry: only one particular (median) plane divides the body into identical left and right halves (e.g. annelids, arthropods, chordates).

(b) Lymph: Lymph is a colourless fluid formed when blood plasma, minus most large proteins and RBCs, filters out of blood capillaries into the tissue spaces. It contains water, some proteins, and white blood cells (mainly lymphocytes). It flows through lymph vessels and nodes, drains back into the blood via large veins, carries absorbed fats from the intestine (via lacteals), and plays a key role in immunity.
