Enzymes are specific, efficient protein catalysts that lower activation energy and are sensitive to temperature and pH.

Important properties of enzymes:

  1. Chemical nature: Most enzymes are proteins (a few RNAs, called ribozymes, are also catalytic).
  2. Catalytic power: They greatly accelerate the rate of biochemical reactions (often by 10^6 to 10^12 times) without themselves being consumed or altered at the end.
  3. Specificity: Each enzyme acts on a specific substrate or a specific type of reaction (lock-and-key / induced-fit model).
  4. Required in small amounts: A tiny quantity of enzyme can convert a large amount of substrate, as it is reused.
  5. Lower activation energy: Enzymes work by lowering the activation energy of the reaction, allowing it to proceed faster at body temperature.
  6. Sensitivity to temperature and pH: Each enzyme has an optimum temperature and optimum pH; extreme temperature or pH denatures the enzyme and destroys its activity. …
