(b) Factors influencing O2 and CO2 transport in blood: O2 transport (as oxyhaemoglobin) is influenced by the partial pressure of O2 (pO2), partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2), hydrogen ion concentration (pH), and temperature — high pCO2, low pH (more acidic) and higher temperature reduce Hb's affinity for O2 (the Bohr effect), promoting O2 unloading in the tissues. CO2 transport (mostly as bicarbonate, some as carbamino-haemoglobin, a little dissolved in plasma) is favoured by high pCO2 in the tissues.
(c) Functions of RBC (erythrocytes): Their main function is to transport respiratory gases — carrying O2 from the lungs to tissues (bound to haemoglobin as oxyhaemoglobin) and assisting in the transport of CO2 back to the lungs. Haemoglobin also acts as a buffer, helping maintain blood pH.
