Cell theory: all organisms are made of cells and cell products, the cell is the basic unit of life, and all cells come from pre-existing cells.

The cell theory was proposed by M. J. Schleiden (1838, a botanist) and Theodor Schwann (1839, a zoologist), who together concluded that all plants and animals are composed of cells and that the cell is the basic structural and functional unit of living organisms. Rudolf Virchow (1855) later added that all cells arise from pre-existing cells (Omnis cellula-e-cellula), completing the modern cell theory.
