Axon = single long process carrying impulses away from the cyton; Dendrite = short, branched process carrying impulses towards the cyton.

Both are cytoplasmic processes of a neuron, but they differ:

Axon:

  1. Usually a single, long process arising from the cell body at the axon hillock.
  2. It is unbranched for most of its length (branches only at the tip as telodendria).
  3. It lacks Nissl's granules and may be covered by a myelin sheath.
  4. It conducts impulses away from the cell body (efferent/cellulifugal direction) towards the synapse.

Dendrite:

  1. Usually several, short, tapering processes.
