(i) Human Nervous System — structure (described for the diagram):
The human nervous system is organised into two major divisions:
- Central Nervous System (CNS) — the brain (enclosed in the cranium) and the spinal cord (enclosed in the vertebral column), which together integrate and process information.
- Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) — all the nerves connecting the CNS to the rest of the body, comprising 12 pairs of cranial nerves (arising from the brain) and 31 pairs of spinal nerves (arising from the spinal cord); functionally further divided into the somatic nervous system (voluntary, skeletal muscle control) and the autonomic nervous system (involuntary, sympathetic + parasympathetic, controlling internal organs).
A correct diagram shows the brain at the top, the spinal cord running down through the vertebral column, and the cranial and spinal nerves branching outward to the head, trunk and limbs.
(ii) Key structures:
- (a) Axon — the single, long, cylindrical process that extends from the neuron's cell body (soma) and conducts nerve impulses away from the cell body toward the axon terminals, which form synapses with the next neuron or effector.
- (b) Membrane Medullary Sheath (Myelin sheath) — a fatty, insulating covering formed by Schwann cells (in the PNS) around many axons; it is interrupted at regular intervals by gaps called the Nodes of Ranvier. The myelin sheath electrically insulates the axon and enables fast, saltatory conduction of the nerve impulse (jumping from node to node). …
