An electrovalent (ionic) bond is formed by complete transfer of electrons from one atom to another, producing oppositely charged ions bound by electrostatic (Coulombic) attraction.

When a metal atom with low ionization enthalpy (e.g., Na) reacts with a non-metal atom with high electron affinity (e.g., Cl), the metal atom loses one or more electrons to attain a stable noble-gas electronic configuration, becoming a positively charged cation. The non-metal atom gains those electrons to complete its own octet, becoming a negatively charged anion. The cation and anion then attract each other through electrostatic force, and this force of attraction constitutes the electrovalent (or ionic) bond.
