Acetylene's sp carbon (50% s-character) makes its C-H bond acidic.

Acidity of a C-H bond depends on how well the conjugate base (the carbanion formed after losing H+) is stabilized -- the more stable the carbanion, the more acidic the C-H bond.

In acetylene (ethyne, HC triple-bond CH), each carbon is sp hybridized (50% s-character, 50% p-character). s-orbitals hold electron density closer to and more tightly around the nucleus than p-orbitals. Because the sp hybrid orbital used in the C-H bond has high s-character, the bonding electron pair -- and consequently any negative charge left on carbon after loss of H+ -- is held closer to the carbon nucleus, making the resulting acetylide ion (HC triple-bond C^-) comparatively more stable than the corresponding sp2 (vinyl, in alkenes) or sp3 (alkyl, in alkanes) carbanions.
