In ethyne (acetylene), each carbon atom is sp hybridized because it is involved in a triple bond (one sigma bond and two pi bonds) with the other carbon. An sp orbital has greater s-character (50%) than sp2 (33%) or sp3 (25%) orbitals. Since s-orbitals are held closer to and more tightly by the nucleus than p-orbitals, a carbon atom using more s-character in its hybrid orbital is effectively more electronegative — it pulls the shared electron pair of the C-H bond closer to itself. This makes the C-H bond in a terminal alkyne more polarized (C is delta-negative, H is delta-positive) than the C-H bond in alkanes or alkenes, so the hydrogen is comparatively easier to remove as H+, giving the molecule weak but real acidic character.
