Aromaticity is determined using Hückel's rule.

Hückel's rule states that a cyclic, planar, and fully conjugated (each ring atom has a p-orbital for continuous overlap) molecule or ion is aromatic if it contains (4n+2) π electrons, where n is a non-negative integer (0, 1, 2, ...). For example, benzene has 6 π electrons (n=1, 4×1+2=6), satisfying the rule and making it aromatic; the cyclopentadienyl anion also has 6 π electrons and is aromatic despite being 5-membered.
