Homolysis of CH3Br gives a methyl radical (CH3•) and a bromine radical (Br•); heterolysis gives a methyl cation (CH3+) and a bromide ion (Br-).

A covalent bond can break in two fundamentally different ways:

Homolytic (homolysis) cleavage: the bond breaks symmetrically, with each fragment retaining one of the two shared (bonding) electrons. This produces two neutral species, each with an unpaired electron, called free radicals. This type of cleavage typically requires energy input such as heat or light (photolysis) and occurs readily for weaker, less polar bonds. For CH3-Br:

CH3-Br --(homolysis)--> CH3• + Br•

(methyl free radical) (bromine free radical/atom)
