Rutherford directed a beam of alpha particles at a thin gold foil; most passed through undeflected but a small fraction bounced back sharply, leading him to conclude that atoms have a tiny, dense, positively charged nucleus surrounded mostly by empty space.

Experiment description: Ernest Rutherford (1911), along with Hans Geiger and Ernest Marsden, directed a narrow beam of fast-moving, high-energy alpha particles (helium nuclei, positively charged) from a radioactive source at a very thin sheet of gold foil (about 100 nm thick), surrounded by a circular fluorescent zinc sulphide (ZnS) screen to detect the scattered alpha particles as tiny flashes of light.

Observations:

  1. Most of the alpha particles (nearly all) passed straight through the gold foil with little or no deflection.
  2. A small fraction of the particles were deflected through small angles.
  3. A very small number (about 1 in 8000) bounced back at large angles, some almost straight back (close to 180°). …
