Rutherford's nuclear atomic model was based on his alpha-particle scattering experiment performed on a thin gold foil.

In 1911, Ernest Rutherford directed a beam of fast-moving alpha particles at a very thin sheet of gold foil (about 100 nm thick). Gold was chosen because it can be hammered into extremely thin, uniform sheets. Most alpha particles passed straight through, some were deflected at small angles, and a very few bounced back at large angles.
