An open system exchanges both matter and energy with its surroundings; a closed system exchanges only energy, not matter.

In thermodynamics, the 'system' is the part of the universe under study, and the 'surroundings' is everything else. Systems are classified by what they can exchange across their boundary:

Open system: Both matter and energy can be transferred between the system and its surroundings. Example: hot water in an open beaker — it loses both heat (energy) and water vapour (matter) to the surrounding air; a living cell is another example, as it exchanges both nutrients/waste (matter) and heat (energy) with its environment.
