The set difference A−BA - B consists of all elements that belong to AA but do not belong to BB; equivalently, A−B=A∩BcA - B = A \cap B^c.

Understanding Set Difference

The operation A−BA - B (read as "AA minus BB" or "the difference of AA and BB") captures a simple idea: we want everything in AA that is not in BB. Think of it as removing from AA all elements that happen to be in BB.

For example, if A={1,2,3,4}A = \{1, 2, 3, 4\} and B={3,4,5,6}B = \{3, 4, 5, 6\}, then A−B={1,2}A - B = \{1, 2\} because we keep only the elements 11 and 22 from AA (the elements 33 and 44 are discarded since they appear in BB).

Formal Definition and Equivalent Forms

  1. Set-builder notation: The most direct way to express A−BA - B is

A−B={x:x∈A and x∉B}A - B = \{x : x \in A \text{ and } x \notin B\}

An element qualifies for membership in A−BA - B if and only if it satisfies both conditions simultaneously.

  1. Using complement and intersection: Since "x∉Bx \notin B" is the same as "x∈Bcx \in B^c" (where BcB^c denotes the complement of BB), we can rewrite the condition as

A−B=A∩BcA - B = A \cap B^c

This form is particularly useful in proofs and when working with Venn diagrams, because it expresses the difference purely in terms of the fundamental operations of intersection and complementation.

Tip

The notation A∖BA \setminus B is also commonly used for set difference, especially in more advanced texts. Both A−BA - B and A∖BA \setminus B mean exactly the same thing.

  1. Relationship with other operations: Notice that A−BA - B is not the same as B−AB - A. In fact, A−BA - B and B−AB - A are generally disjoint sets. Also, A−B⊆AA - B \subseteq A always holds, but A−BA - B may be empty (when A⊆BA \subseteq B) or equal to AA itself (when AA and BB are disjoint). …
