The zeroth law says thermal equilibrium is transitive between systems, which is what allows us to define and measure temperature.

Consider three thermodynamic systems A, B and C. If system A is in thermal equilibrium with system C (no net heat flows between them when placed in contact), and system B is also in thermal equilibrium with system C, then the zeroth law states that A and B must also be in thermal equilibrium with each other — even without being placed in direct contact.
