The zeroth law states that if system A is in thermal equilibrium with system C, and system B is also in thermal equilibrium with C, then A and B must be in thermal equilibrium with each other — this justifies the concept of temperature.

Two systems are said to be in thermal equilibrium when there is no net flow of heat between them if they are brought into thermal contact — meaning they are at the same temperature.

The zeroth law formalizes this: let C be a thermometer. If C shows the same reading when in contact with A as when in contact with B (A and B are each separately in equilibrium with C), then A and B, if brought into contact with each other directly, will also show no heat flow between them — they are in equilibrium with each other too.
