Rahul brings no goodwill, so it is debited to his Current Account and credited to Ram and Rahim in 3:2.

  1. With no goodwill in the books, the full ₹30,000 is raised.
  2. With ₹15,000 already in the books, that is written off first and only ₹15,000 more is raised.

Concept

This NCERT Class 12 goodwill treatment problem shows the same admission handled two ways depending on whether goodwill already sits in the books. Goodwill the new partner does not bring is charged to his Current Account; any goodwill already in the books is written off in the old ratio before the new value is given effect. Ram and Rahim share in 3:2 (both the old and sacrificing ratio, as Rahul takes his share in the old ratio).

Working Notes

  • Ram : Rahim sacrificing ratio = old ratio = 3:2.
  • (a) Full goodwill ₹30,000 → Ram 30,000 × 3/5 = ₹18,000; Rahim 30,000 × 2/5 = ₹12,000.
  • (b) Existing ₹15,000 written off in 3:2 (Ram ₹9,000, Rahim ₹6,000); balance to be raised = 30,000 − 15,000 = ₹15,000 → Ram ₹9,000, Rahim ₹6,000.
