Taylor's scientific-management techniques: functional foremanship, standardisation & simplification, method/motion/time/fatigue study, and the differential piece-wage system.

F.W. Taylor, the Father of Scientific Management, gave the following techniques:

  1. Functional Foremanship — an extension of division of work to supervision; Taylor proposed eight specialist foremen (four for planning: route clerk, instruction-card clerk, time-and-cost clerk, disciplinarian; and four for doing: speed boss, gang boss, repair boss, inspector) so each worker gets expert guidance.
  2. Standardisation and Simplification of Work — fixing standards for raw materials, tools, methods and working conditions (standardisation) and eliminating unnecessary varieties/sizes (simplification) to reduce cost and inventory.
  3. Method Study — finding the one best method of doing a job (from procurement to delivery) to minimise cost and maximise satisfaction.
  4. Motion Study — study of the movements of a worker/machine while doing a job to eliminate unnecessary motions and keep only productive ones.
  5. Time Study — determining the standard time a worker should take to complete a task, used to fix fair day's work and incentive rates. …
