F.W. Taylor's techniques of scientific management:

  1. Functional Foremanship — a worker is guided by eight specialist foremen (four for planning: route clerk, instruction-card clerk, time-and-cost clerk, disciplinarian; four for execution: speed boss, gang boss, repair boss, inspector) so he gets expert advice in each area.
  2. Standardisation and Simplification of Work — fixing standards for materials, tools, methods and working conditions (standardisation) and eliminating unnecessary varieties/sizes (simplification) to cut cost and inventory.
  3. Method Study — finding the one best method of doing a job (from procurement to delivery) to minimise cost and maximise satisfaction.
