Training improves job skills (planned); off-the-job methods (away from the workplace) include lectures, vestibule training, case study, role play, programmed instruction and films/simulation.

Training (2): Training is the process of increasing the knowledge, skills and aptitudes of employees for doing a particular job. It is planned and systematic, improves performance, reduces errors and accidents, and prepares employees for future responsibilities.

Six off-the-job training methods (6) — conducted away from the actual job, usually in a classroom or training centre:

  1. Lectures and conferences — a trainer delivers information to a group; useful for conveying theoretical knowledge to many trainees at once.
  2. Vestibule training — trainees learn on duplicate equipment/machines set up away from the actual shop floor, under an instructor, before being put on the real job; avoids disrupting production and damage to real machines.
  3. Case study method — trainees analyse real or hypothetical business problems (cases) and suggest solutions, developing analytical and decision-making skills.
  4. Role playing — trainees act out roles in a simulated situation (e.g. a salesperson and a customer) to learn interpersonal and problem-handling skills. …
