Q.Try this simple sitting-rising test for yourself: 1. Stand in comfortable clothes on bare feet, with clear space around you. 2. Without using any type of support, lower yourself to a sitting position on the floor in a controlled movement. 3. Now stand back up, without using your hands, knees, forearms, or the sides of your legs for support, and without loss of balance. Scoring: the two basic movements (lowering and standing back up) are each scored on a scale of 1 to 5, with one point subtracted each time a hand or knee is used for support and 0.5 points subtracted for loss of balance (maximum achievable score = 1 per movement). Perform the test and record your own score.

The test directly applies the chapter's equilibrium/stability ideas: completing the movement without using hands, knees or legs for support requires keeping your centre of gravity continuously within your base of support (your feet) throughout the whole lowering-and-rising sequence — exactly the 'continual adjustment of body segments to control the centre of gravity' the chapter describes as a key part of any skill. …
