Ecosystem structure = abiotic components + biotic components (producers, consumers, decomposers) arranged in trophic levels. OR: Transcription copies a DNA template into RNA via initiation, elongation, and termination.

Structure of an ecosystem

An ecosystem's structure refers to the composition of its biotic and abiotic components, their distribution, and how they interact.

  1. Abiotic components — the non-living physical and chemical factors: climatic factors (temperature, light, humidity, rainfall) and edaphic factors (soil, pH, minerals, topography, water) that determine the type and distribution of life the ecosystem can support, and serve as raw materials for organic production.

  2. Biotic components — the living organisms, organised by their nutritional/functional role into:

    • Producers — autotrophs (green plants, algae, cyanobacteria) that fix solar energy into organic matter via photosynthesis, forming the base of every food chain.
    • Consumers — heterotrophs that depend directly/indirectly on producers: primary consumers/herbivores (feed on producers), secondary consumers/primary carnivores (feed on herbivores), and tertiary consumers/top carnivores.
    • Decomposers — saprotrophs (bacteria, fungi) that break down dead organic matter (of producers and consumers) and release inorganic nutrients back into the soil/environment for reuse by producers, thereby driving nutrient cycling.

These components are organised into trophic levels (feeding levels), and the ecosystem's structure is studied via species composition, stratification (vertical layering, e.g. canopy/shrub/herb in a forest), and standing crop/standing state at each trophic level.

OR — Mechanism of transcription

Transcription is the process of copying genetic information from one strand of DNA (the template strand) into a complementary RNA molecule, carried out by the enzyme RNA polymerase. It proceeds in three stages:
