Succession is the sequential replacement of communities in an area, from pioneer species to a stable climax community, in response to changing environmental and biotic conditions.

Ecological succession is the process by which communities of plant and animal species in a given area are progressively replaced by other, usually more complex, communities until a relatively stable, self-perpetuating community (the climax community) — one in near equilibrium with the local environment — is established. It begins with the colonisation of a bare/newly available area by a few hardy species (pioneers), which modify the habitat (e.g., adding organic matter to bare rock), making it suitable for other species; these are gradually replaced by successive seral communities in a sequence called a sere, ending in the climax.
