Structure of the mature human sperm:

A human sperm has four main regions — head, neck, middle piece, and tail — each specialised for delivering the haploid genome and providing motility.

  • Head: Contains the haploid, condensed nucleus. The front of the head is capped by the acrosome, a membrane-bound vesicle filled with hydrolytic enzymes that help the sperm penetrate the egg's protective layers (corona radiata, zona pellucida) at fertilisation.
  • Neck: A short region containing the centriole, important for the first cell division after fertilisation.
  • Middle piece: Contains numerous mitochondria arranged spirally, which generate the ATP energy needed to power the tail's movement.
  • Tail (flagellum): A long, whip-like structure responsible for the swimming motility of the sperm.
  • The entire sperm is enclosed by a plasma membrane.

(Labelled diagram: head with acrosome and nucleus, neck with centriole, middle piece with mitochondrial spiral, and the long tail/flagellum.)

OR — Watson-Crick model of semiconservative DNA replication:

James Watson and Francis Crick's double-helix model predicted that DNA replication is semiconservative:

  1. The two strands of the parental double helix unwind and separate (via helicase, breaking hydrogen bonds).
  2. Each parental strand acts as a template, and a new complementary strand is synthesised opposite it by DNA polymerase, following strict base-pairing rules (A pairs with T, G pairs with C). …
