Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is the classic bacterium used as a biopesticide.

Bacillus thuringiensis is a Gram-positive, spore-forming soil bacterium. During sporulation it produces crystalline protein inclusions called Cry proteins (Bt toxin). When an insect larva ingests plant material sprayed with Bt spores/toxin, the alkaline gut environment solubilises the crystal, the toxin binds to specific receptors on the gut epithelium, forms pores, and causes the gut cells to lyse — killing the larva within a few days.
