Mycorrhiza is a mutualistic fungus-root association; its main application is as a biofertilizer that improves plant phosphorus/water uptake and stress resistance.

Mycorrhiza ('fungus-root') is a symbiotic association between certain soil fungi (e.g. Glomus) and the roots of most vascular plants. In vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhiza (VAM), fungal hyphae remain external to the root as well as penetrating cortical cells, greatly increasing the effective absorptive surface area.

Applications/benefits:

  1. Enhanced nutrient absorption: the hyphal network absorbs phosphorus (and zinc, copper) from a much larger soil volume than roots alone, transferring it to the plant.
  2. Improved water uptake: increases drought tolerance.
  3. Resistance to root pathogens: confers some resistance against soil-borne pathogens.
  4. Resistance to stress: increases tolerance to salt stress and heavy-metal toxicity in some cases. …
