Okazaki fragments = short DNA pieces made discontinuously on the lagging strand, later joined by DNA ligase.

DNA polymerase can synthesise a new strand only in the 5'->3' direction. As the replication fork opens, one template (3'->5') allows continuous synthesis (the leading strand). The opposite template runs 5'->3', so its new strand cannot be made continuously; instead it is synthesised in short stretches, each in the 5'->3' direction but away from the fork.
