Using Raoult's law, p_total is a linear function of the mole fraction, since p_total = p₂° + (p₁° − p₂°)x₁.

For an ideal solution of two volatile liquids 1 and 2, Raoult's law gives the partial vapour pressure of each component as proportional to its mole fraction in the liquid:

p₁ = x₁·p₁° and p₂ = x₂·p₂°

where p₁°, p₂° are the vapour pressures of the pure liquids.

The total vapour pressure above the solution (Dalton's law) is:

p_total = p₁ + p₂ = x₁p₁° + x₂p₂°

Since x₁ + x₂ = 1, put x₂ = (1 − x₁):

p_total = x₁p₁° + (1 − x₁)p₂°

p_total = p₂° + (p₁° − p₂°)x₁
