It closes only when every causing error is rectified; if some errors stay undetected, the remaining balance is carried forward and shown in the Balance Sheet (debit balance on the asset side, credit balance on the liabilities side).
What is a Suspense Account
When, despite all efforts, the trial balance does not tally, the difference between the debit and credit totals is placed in a temporary account called the Suspense Account — on the shorter side so that the trial balance agrees. This lets the business proceed with its final accounts while the errors are still being searched for.
Will it always balance off after rectification?
Not necessarily. The Suspense Account closes (balances off) only if all the one-sided errors that created the original difference are located and rectified through it. Each rectified one-sided error passes through the Suspense Account and gradually wipes out its balance.
What happens to a balance still remaining
| Situation | Treatment |
|---|---|
| All causing errors located and corrected | Suspense Account is fully closed — no balance remains |
| Some errors still undetected | A balance remains and is carried forward to the next accounting year |
