By the time of independence, India possessed only a handful of modern industries. The main ones were cotton textiles, jute, iron and steel (TISCO), and a few units in sugar, cement and paper. The industrial base was narrow and underdeveloped.

Background

Colonial policy deliberately kept India's industrialisation weak. However, in the second half of the nineteenth century a few modern industries did come up, and by 1947 India had a small modern industrial sector.

The modern industries in operation

  • Cotton textile mills — the first to appear, located mainly in the western parts of the country, in Maharashtra and Gujarat, and largely owned and controlled by Indians.
  • Jute mills — concentrated in Bengal, and dominated by foreigners.
  • Iron and steel — the Tata Iron and Steel Company (TISCO) was incorporated in 1907, a landmark in Indian heavy industry.
  • Other industries — after the Second World War, a few more units came up in sugar, cement and paper, though on a limited scale.
